  • Feminism: the advocacy of women's rights on the ground of the equality of the sexes.

  • Women's Liberation: the liberation of women from inequalities and subservient status in relation to men.

  • Gender Inequality: discrimination on the basis of sex or gender causing one sex or gender to be routinely privileged or prioritized over another

Feminism recently, I'm sure we all know about the handball discussion regarding women wanting to wear shorts instead of bikini bottoms when playing. In the handball Euro 2021 tournament the Norwegian women's team wore above the know bicycle shorts, similar to the length of the male handball uniform, the Norwegian team said they didn't feel comfortable in the crop top and bikini bottoms and wanted to change the rules as they were ridiculous. The team was fined 1,500 euros for improper dress by the federation of Handball.

Since, many have petitioned to the federation to over turn the fee and make an adjustment to the clothing rules for the handball games for women. At first the federation would not support or change the rules and stuck to the bikini bottoms requirement, this mindset soon changed as they faced worldwide backlash for there decision and were forced into changing the rule to 'Short pants with a close fit'.

How was the concept of Feminism started, if you think right back to the BC times when women slaved around for men, and that's how it was, there was never any thought of females being able to vote or work or even breath freely etc, then how did we move to the present time of women working with men, being on the same pay as men - most of the times, women owning land and houses? - The suffragette movement.

The suffragette movement started by a few women in the early 20th century, the quick growing activist organisation inspired thousands of women to join and fight for the right vote in general elections. At this time women were only allowed to vote in small local elections which to be honest did shit all. Women have always been vital contributors to the economy, working in factories and manufacturing companies on a small wage, producing garments, packaging etc, this was the only way they could produce there own life without a male presence that gave them a glimpse of freedom. Quite a few of the tactics the suffragettes used were fairly aggressive at first claiming that if immigrants could vote, then native women should be able to. They then moved to hunger strikes, protests this showed the female strength and once some of the women were imprisoned for speaking up for there cause the suffragettes outside become stronger and pushed harder, the vote was then passed and women were granted the right to vote.

Soon after women started partaking in male sports, a popular one being mountaineering - which is interesting as they still had to wear the full corset, layered skirt dress etc so the difficulty the dress caused while riding a bike just shows pure persistence and motivation. The fashion of women around the late 20th century included no skirts above the ankle, full modesty, the more fabric you wore showed the how wealthy you were, so wearing this while exercising and doing sporting activities would be extremely dangerous and if something went wrong like the fabric getting stuck in a wheel, could have let to a fatal accident.

1930s inspired women glamour in speakeasies, one of personal favourite times. Celebrities influencing the time were people such as Joan Crawford and Marlyn Monroe, embracing the glitz the glamour and all the beauty. Silhouettes were much more structured compared to the loose clothing now, but they were much more extra with sequins, feathers, bright colours, lavish accessories etc.
